FAQ

Baptism & Communion

Presbyterians believe that Baptism is a sign that we are a part of the community of believers throughout the world and through all the ages. When joining the Presbyterian church, individuals who have not been baptized will receive the sacrament during the worship service when new members are presented to the congregation.

Those who are being baptized upon profession of faith declare their intent to participate actively and responsibly in the church’s worship and mission.

When Christian parents present their infant children for Baptism, they consecrate themselves to the task of bringing up their child in the faith of the church. The congregation promises to surround their child with their love and concern in Christ.

The pastor introduces the Sacrament of Baptism with Scripture followed by prayer. Each person will be presented by their Christian or given name and water from the baptismal font will be sprinkled on their head saying, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

Communion is served either by intinction (dipping the bread in the cup) or a single serving of the bread and cup, if preferred. Gluten- and allergen-free bread is available. The cup is non-alcoholic grape juice.

The ushers will direct those wishing to receive Communion, by row. Those receiving the sacraments by intinction will be given a piece of bread by the server who will offer words of affirmation such as “The bread of life given for you.” You will then dip the bread into the cup and receive an affirmation such as “The blood of Christ, freely given to you.”

Those who prefer not to receive Communion by intinction may proceed to the server stationed in the front center of the aisle. The server will hand the single serving bread and cup to you.

If you would prefer to stay seated, please let an usher know and they will have the Communion elements brought to you in your pew.
