Adults

Sundays

Adult Sunday School classes lead to a fuller, richer faith journey and more active involvement in the ministry of the church.

Sunday School

Sundays at 9:15 Am

Location: Classroom Bldg. C202

The Bible in Depth (BinD) Class is perfect for people who are curious about the Bible and eager to read it carefully and discuss it freely.

BinD explores the origins, authorship, historical background, meanings, and messages of the Bible in lively discussions appropriate for anyone who is seeking to understand the foundation on which our faith is built.

Typically, the class takes up one book of the Bible at a time and covers about a chapter a week.

Location: Classroom Bldg. C204

The Faith and Theology (FaT) class routinely studies theology, books of the Bible, and thought leaders in the forefront of understanding faith in the modern world.  While most students enjoy reading the diverse literature in the curriculum, one can benefit from attending the class without the benefit of prior study.

Newcomers are welcomed!

Location: Classroom Bldg. C200

This multi-age class is perfect for people who want to study the Bible in an informal discussion setting. The class meets at the Kirk but also offers a Zoom option.

To prepare for class, some participants read the Bible passage and accompanying guide, but others just show up.

The class is taught by 6 rotating class members.

Location: Classroom Bldg. C203

This class is perfect for people who enjoy challenging their faith, taking absolutely nothing for granted. A variety of opinions are welcomed – from any and all perspectives!

  • Topical studies in theology, spirituality, and social justice
  • Discussion-oriented; divergent viewpoints encouraged
  • Preparation not required but beneficial
  • The Seekers are a lively, free-form, wide-ranging, discussion class whose studies include topics in theology, spirituality, and social justice. There is no set curriculum or teacher. Leadership of the discussion is shared among the class members and is voluntary.

Advance preparation (reading of the materials) is not required, but is highly beneficial to the discussion. The group encourages divergent viewpoints and opinions and frequently questions the dominant paradigm.

The class engages in occasional fellowship activities such as potlucks or attending a concert/ballet.

Class outreach activities include refugee resettlement support and cooking for The Carying Place.

Location: Classroom Bldg. C211

This is a class where you can truly come as you are. You never have to prepare. You never have to do “homework.” You only have to show up and be present.

When we gather on Sunday mornings, we read the day’s sermon text using a method called lectio divina (prayerful reading), practice centering prayer or a guided meditation, and share our joys, sorrows and faith experience. This is a quiet, meditative place for sharing your faith and caring for your brothers and sisters in faith.

K-Groups

K-Groups at the Kirk are small groups that focus on fellowship, Bible study and spiritual growth. The “K” is short for Koinonia, a Greek word referring to an intimate partnership with Jesus Christ and others.

Koinonia groups were developed to help Christians in large churches connect with fellow members spiritually and personally on a level the congregation’s size makes difficult. The groups’ meetings and the relationships they foster create more of a small church atmosphere, in which people come to know each other well.

The model for the groups comes from the New Testament which describes how the early Christians met in small groups for fellowship over a simple meal, study, and prayer.

To find out more about how to join a Koinonia Group or start a new group, contact Stephanie Workman, 919-467-4944.

Presbyterian Women

Presbyterian Women (PW) organizations have been a vital part of many Presbyterian congregations for over two hundred years.  The “PW Purpose” statement outlines the mission and ministry goals – nurturing faith through prayer and Bible study, supporting the mission of the church, working for justice and peace, and building an inclusive, caring community of women.

The Kirk has a number of “circles” that meet monthly. These small groups participate in Bible study, engage in church and community projects, and members contribute to two annual special offerings, the Birthday Offering and the Thank Offering. Circles are a great way for women to connect with other women and support one another in fellowship and service. All women are invited to join a circle and attend an annual Salad Supper and Christmas Brunch at the church as well as an annual off-site weekend retreat.
